KUNST HAUS WIEN

KUNST HAUS WIEN is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective to the American artist couple Lillian Bassman (1917–2012) and Paul Himmel (1914–2009). Lillian Bassman’s fashion photography, torn between experimental aesthetics and gripping staging, impresses viewers with its elegance and sense of style. In her work for “Harper’s Bazaar” and “Vogue,” a stream of new photographic procedures allowed her to develop a unique style that appears almost painterly. Paul Himmel’s work also appears timeless with its almost radical joy in experimentation. He transformed from a popular fashion photographer to a freelance artists and sounded out the limits of the genre in terms of both motifs and technology. Together, the couple created a body of work full of productive paradoxes and creative tensions that even now has lost none of its modernity.
